Virtual reality art therapy for borderline personality disorder
Covered July 28, 2026
Eight participants completed four weekly VR-based art sessions, with wellbeing measured throughout. A small pilot, not proof.
Researchers tested whether combining art therapy with virtual reality could help people with borderline personality disorder. Eight participants completed four weekly VR-based art sessions, and the team measured changes in wellbeing, emotion regulation, depression, anxiety, and stress using standard validated questionnaires. The results were encouraging: participants showed improvements across wellbeing and emotion regulation, plus reductions in depression, anxiety, and stress, with anxiety showing a statistically significant drop. People also reported finding the sessions genuinely helpful. That said, this is a small pilot study with only eight participants and no control group, so it's an early, promising signal rather than confirmed evidence, and the authors themselves note larger studies are needed before drawing firm conclusions.
