Is the thalamus different in schizoaffective disorder?

Detailed imaging broke the thalamus into sub-regions across schizophrenia, schizoaffective disorder, and healthy controls.
Researchers used detailed brain imaging to compare thalamus structure in 25 people with schizophrenia, 20 people with schizoaffective disorder, and 26 healthy controls, breaking the thalamus down into its individual sub-regions (nuclei) rather than treating it as one uniform structure. They found that people with schizoaffective disorder had a notably smaller right-side thalamus overall, plus specific reductions in nuclei tied to sensory processing, emotional regulation, and pain. People with straightforward schizophrenia didn't show this same pattern to the same degree. This suggests schizoaffective disorder, which blends psychotic and mood symptoms, may have its own distinct brain signature rather than just being a hybrid or milder variant of schizophrenia, and could eventually help refine how these conditions are diagnosed and distinguished from each other.
