Schizophrenia genetics beyond European ancestry

Most schizophrenia genetics has studied European populations. This study set out to close a major gap in the science.
Most genetic research on schizophrenia has historically focused on people of European ancestry, leaving a major gap in scientific understanding for the rest of the world. This study, led by researchers at Mount Sinai, SUNY Downstate, and the VA, conducted the largest genome-wide association study of schizophrenia ever done in people of African ancestry. The team identified more than 100 new genetic regions linked to schizophrenia that hadn't been clearly detected before, many of which are more common specifically in people of African ancestry, explaining why earlier, less diverse studies missed them entirely. Crucially, even though the specific genetic variants differ across populations (different genetic "spelling changes," as the researchers put it), those variants tend to disrupt the same underlying genes, brain cell types, and signaling pathways tied to maintaining balanced brain activity. In other words, schizophrenia's biological roots appear to be fundamentally shared across populations worldwide, even when the genetic risk factors that trigger it vary. The researchers are careful to note that none of this allows for predicting who will or won't develop schizophrenia, since environmental, social, and cultural factors matter just as much and aren't captured by genetics alone. The bigger picture: broader representation in genetic research doesn't just help one population, it strengthens confidence in the universal biology of the disorder and lays groundwork for future treatments that could work across diverse populations.
