A million genomes reveal what mental illnesses share

This massive genetic study looked at more than a million people to understand how different mental health disorders are connected beneath the surface. Instead of treating diagnoses like schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, depression, PTSD, and anxiety as completely separate, the researchers examined how their genetic patterns overlap. They found that many of these conditions share large portions of the same genetic influences, forming clusters that cut across traditional diagnostic categories. For example, schizophrenia and bipolar disorder share a strong genetic foundation, while depression, PTSD, and anxiety form another closely related group. These shared genetic patterns were linked to specific brain‑related biological pathways. The findings suggest that our current diagnostic system may not fully reflect the underlying biology of mental health conditions—and that future treatments might be more effective if they target these shared genetic and neural pathways rather than focusing on individual diagnoses alone.
