How many teens develop PTSD after an earthquake?
Covered July 13, 2026
A survey of 234 adolescents found most were resilient — but a meaningful minority showed real distress, with hyperarousal the most common symptom.
This study looked at how many adolescents show signs of PTSD after living through an earthquake. Researchers surveyed 234 teens using a standard PTSD checklist. Most adolescents did not show overall PTSD symptoms, but some did experience specific difficulties—such as re‑experiencing memories, avoiding reminders of the event, changes in mood, and heightened alertness. Hyperarousal symptoms were the most common. Although most teens appeared resilient, a meaningful minority showed signs of distress. The study highlights the importance of early support, resilience‑building programs, and mental‑health resources in schools and communities to help young people cope after natural disasters.
