Do psychedelics harm memory?

An exploratory study of working memory after a single dose. Reassuring β but it had no control group.
As psychedelics move toward mainstream mental-health treatment, an important question often gets less attention than the hype: do they harm cognition? This exploratory study looked specifically at working memory, the mental scratchpad you use to hold and manipulate information. Healthy volunteers received a single dose of either psilocybin or MDMA (29 people analyzed per drug, with 16 taking both after a washout period), and completed a demanding memory task while researchers recorded brain activity with EEG, before dosing, days after, and again at a three-month follow-up. The reassuring result: no evidence of working-memory impairment from a single dose of either drug. If anything, brain recordings showed lasting changes in memory-related neural activity, and memory task accuracy actually improved by three months. The crucial caveat, which the authors themselves stress, is that this study had no control group, so improvements could partly reflect practice on the task or other factors, not the drugs alone. Thatβs why this counts as a reassuring signal rather than proof. Still, for a field where fears of cognitive damage are frequently raised, finding no sign of memory harm from controlled single doses is a meaningful, if preliminary, data point, and a good example of why careful measurement should temper both the fear and the hype.
